Water - HDPE PDF Print E-mail

High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) is a polyethylene thermoplastic made from petroleum. It takes 1.75 kilograms of petroleum (in terms of energy and raw materials) to make one kilogram of HDPE.

HDPE has little branching, giving it stronger intermolecular forces and tensile strength than lower density polyethylene. It is also harder and more rigid, and can withstand somewhat higher temperatures (120 deg C for short periods of time).

The use of HDPE Water piping goes back to the 1950's. HDPE materials have changed since its original properties. The changes have come in different generations and have slowly added to the value HDPE Water pipes offers the end users. WIth the changes to ASTM in 2006 North America is seeing HDPE pipes perform with high pressure ratings, higher temperatures and much greater Environmental Stress Crack resistance.
